Meet Melanie

The next time you visit the Grand Traverse Pie Company in Ann Arbor, you may see Melanie hard at work! Or maybe you'll enjoy some delicious pie or oatmeal crumble that she's helped to prepare. Melanie's been employed by GTPC as a part-time bakery assistant for some time now and really enjoys working as part of their baking team.

Melanie started vocational services with Skill and Ability Education through a work readiness group workshop at her Young Adult Program (YAP). She and her parents then worked with her service coordinator to set up a short-term work experience in the community. During the initial meeting for those services, Melanie advocated for herself and her long-term employment goal; "I dream of working in a bakery someday!"  With that goal in mind, Melanie completed her work experience in a grocery bakery department, where she gained experience preparing and packaging various baked goods for sale.

After successfully completing the experience, Melanie was then referred for job placement services and secured employment at Grand Traverse Pie Company. She started out working a couple shifts per week, with job coaching to support her success through onboarding, training and learning her typical tasks. As she gained experience at GTPC  and demonstrated increased confidence and competence in her work, Melanie took on an extra shift and some bakery assistant tasks. Melanie continued to increase her independence at work to the point of job coaching eventually fading out completely.

Her mother, Zarina, shared the following about Melanie's experiences in vocational rehabilitation services: "My daughter, Melanie, faces challenges learning new skills, but her enthusiasm for her job at the Grand Traverse Pie Company was truly inspiring. Coaches from Skill and Ability were absolutely instrumental in her success. They provided unwavering support and guidance, patiently breaking down tasks and building her confidence every step of the way.

It's clear they possess a deep understanding of individual learning styles and tailor their approach to each person's needs. They didn't just teach skills; they fostered a sense of accomplishment and independence. Watching Melanie thrive, despite her challenges, is a testament to their dedication and expertise.

Seeing a child succeed is the ultimate reward for a parent. I wholeheartedly attest to the crucial role the Skill and Ability team played in Melanie's journey. Their commitment to empowering individuals is remarkable, and I'm incredibly grateful for their support. I'm so happy such a program exists; it's invaluable in helping individuals thrive and prosper."

Throughout her journey, Melanie has demonstrated so many qualities that now make her a successful employee at GTPC. She's reliable, hard-working, motivated, eager to learn and approaches every shift with positivity and professionalism. We raise a pie fork to your ongoing success!
