Vocational Support: Gary Emmerich

garyz.jpg

Gary started with Skill and Ability Education in the summer of 2020 as a contingent vocational support (job coach), providing community-based job assessments, job coaching support, and summer work experiences.

Gary earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. While completing undergraduate studies, he began his lifelong vocational journey in a people helping profession. He did this by taking a part-time job supporting folks in group home settings. Shortly after graduation, Gary decided to pursue a Masters degree in Vocational Rehabilitation. Gary chose this path due to his previous group home work experience. While involved in that position, Gary learned first hand the impact that being employed has on the lives of people with varying abilities/disabilities. Gary was greatly influenced by the enrichment that being employed has on an individual’s overall health, well-being and life in general.

After completing his Masters degree, Gary moved to Michigan with his wife and worked for more than 15 years with a voc rehab company in Livingston county. Today, through his job at Skill and Ability Education, he has been able to continue with his journey of helping people with a focus on supporting them at their jobs and providing job assessments, allowing him to assist people to greater opportunities for successful employment.

In his free time Gary enjoys spending time with his family, including his cat and dog, bird watching, camping, kayak fishing with his son, and watching/following the southeast Michigan and Wisconsin sports scene.
